The class is open to anyone who wants to explore discipleship regardless of age, education, or spiritual maturity.

Come Follow Me begins with examining the biblical definition of discipleship and then proceeds to examine its three main components: Know Jesus, Love Jesus, Share Jesus.  At each class meeting we will sing hymns that connect with the daily topic, study the scriptures using an interactive lecture and discussion format, and participate in a guided time of prayer. Every participant will be given a journal and should bring their own print copy of the Bible in a standard translation.

Dates:  September 29 – December 8, 2022

Time:  Thursdays, 12-2:30pm

Class Description

This course is an overview of the important events in Christian history from the second century through the 19th century.  An understanding of Christian history is very useful to the disciple who seeks to grow in his or her understanding of the faith.   Reflecting on the events of the past allows us to learn from the faithful walk of those who have gone before and can be very encouraging.   It is also a lot of fun!

Class Structure & Required Textbook

This class follows a discussion-seminar format, meaning there is no lecture.  Instead, the class is a guided discussion of Mark Noll, Turning Points: Decisive Moments in the History of Christianity (3rd edition; 2012).   Each participant reads the assigned chapter prior to class to facilitate good discussion.

At each class meeting we will also sing a few hymns and read scriptures that connect with the daily topic and spend a few minutes in prayer.   Coffee and snacks are provided at the breaks.  Every participant receives a NWSD notebook and pen but should have a good print copy of the Bible in a standard translation in addition to a copy of the textbook.

Cost & Registration

As noted above, there is no fee for Discipleship courses in the NWSD.  Instead, we ask that participants prayerfully consider making a donation to support the ministry of the NWSD each time you take a discipleship course.   Registration is required so we can set up chairs appropriately.

Dates:  September 28 – November 16

Time:  Wednesdays, 7-8:30pm

Course Description

The scriptural exhortation “Be Holy as I am Holy” (I Peter 1:16) captures the high moral standards Jesus has for his followers.  In essence, Christians are called to imitate their heavenly Father in his holiness and strive to be like Him in their daily lives.  This course explores foundations of the Christian moral life and examines specific issues of special interest to followers of Jesus today.

Class Structure & Required Textbook

This class is structured as a guided discussion of Keith Stanglin, Ethics Beyond Rules: How Christ’s Call to Love Informs our Moral Choices (Zondervan, 2021).   Dr. Stanglin is the featured speaker for the NWSD Fall seminar, “Glorify God in Your Body: The Christian Sexual Ethic in a Post-Christian Culture” (Nov 5).  Participants in this class will have the opportunity to read most of Dr. Stanglin’s book and discuss it together with other Christians in a structured environment and with the author when he is at Southwest for the seminar.  The book is readable and the weekly assigned reading is manageable.

Every participant receives a NWSD notebook and should have a good print copy of the Bible in a standard translation.
